30 Year of Care at Penpergwm House

On the weekend of the 10th/11th June, Penpergwm House took time to celebrate being open for business for an incredible 30 years.  The Home has been providing superior care for the Monmouthshire area since it opened, but has since developed from being a Residential Home to having the additional services of Home Care, Day Care and a Training Centre.  Monmouthshire resident, Priscilla Llewelyn, from Llanvihangel Crucorney, continues to be the Registered Manager and Managing Director of the organisation and her passionate belief in the ethos of ‘everything is possible, whatever age you are’, is still very important to her and central to how she runs Penpergwm House.  She, alongside her then business partners, Mike and Colleen Cauchi and David Filsell, started the Home in 1987 – converting Priscilla’s family home to a 16 bed Care Home, which seems a distant memory to the expansive 34 bed facility it is now.  These days, Priscilla has been joined by her son, Hugo, in the running of the business which has a growing staff of over 100 across the different demands of the company.

The weather forecast throughout the run up to the celebration weekend was far from

ideal, with such abnormally high winds at the beginning of the week, that we struggled to keep bunting, gazebos and banners afloat!  Regardless of the bruised skies on Saturday morning – wonderful family, friends and supporters arrived to enjoy a fun-filled morning at the Summer Fair, with amongst other things: a raffle, face-painting, kids zone, plants and cakes stalls and a fabulous auction of wonderful prizes donated by the very kind businesses in and around Abergavenny; which got everyone enthused and raised lots of money for our Residents’ Fund.  The BBQ was lit and food was provided for all, alongside the fantastic music provided by members of the Abergavenny Borough Youth Brass Band. So, as the band played familiar tunes in the marquee in the garden, no drop of rain could dampen the spirits of the residents and all who attended to continue thoroughly enjoying such a happy occasion.

During the event, Priscilla was able to take the opportunity to thank all her staff for their hard work and dedication, but in particular, was able to highlight a large number of staff who had worked for Penpergwm House for 10 years or more by presenting them with personalised hampers, supplied by one of our carers, Gemma Price.  Two members of staff, Head of Housekeeping and one of the Gardening team, have both reached a very impressive 20 years of service and still very much going strong - a true reflection of what a special place Penpergwm House is, in which to  live and work.

As a car enthusiast, Sunday presented the opportunity for Priscilla to host a Car Treasure Hunt (devised by David Filsell) followed by a Cream Tea and this was much appreciated by those that took part.  Eight cars set off and although not all fully completed the fairly tricky but excellent course, a great fun time was had by all involved.

Here’s to the next 30 years of quality and bespoke care at Penpergwm House.
